The Story of COPD

The word 'obstructive' (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) illustrates traditional thinking as to the cause of COPD. The 'obstruction' of air between our body and the environment is still considered by many to be the disease. That is why traditional treatments, like bronchodilators, attempt to open the lungs.

But this pathogenesis was questioned by a Russian scientist and physician, Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko. Professor Buteyko studied the chemistry of breathing for 30 years. He discovered that conventional wisdom about COPD was wrong. COPD patients actually over-breathe, and their body responds by attempting to 'obstruct' further loss of air as a self-protective mechanism. First, because the training done with a precisely calculated resistance, the diaphragm and transverse abdominus muscles are strengthened, which encourages slow, relaxed diaphragmatic breathing.
